The Department for Education (DfE) has launched a new consultation on Education Otherwise Than at School (EOTAS), following concerns raised during the SEND Reform consultation that there was limited information about how the proposed reforms would affect children and young people currently receiving EOTAS provision.
EOTAS applies where a child or young person’s special educational provision, as set out in their Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), cannot appropriately be delivered in a school or further education setting. It is a vital provision for some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the country.
The consultation seeks views on how EOTAS provision should be:
- Identified
- Managed
- Quality assured
It is essential that the lived experiences of children, young people and families help to shape any future changes so please make sure to respond to the consultation if you are currently accessing EOTAS or are considering one.
The consultation will close at 11:59pm on 18 September 2026.
