This session will be delivered by students from The University of Law and is FREE to book for parents and carers of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) in Manchester.

This session will consider what will happen if you or a family member are detained under the Mental Health Act 1983. It will look at what rights you would be allowed and the appeal process. During this session you will:

• Receive an overview of the detention criteria for Section 2 and Section 3
• Police powers for s.135 & s.136 Mental Health Act
• Overview of mental disorder
• Rights once detained
• The role of the Nearest Relative
• Appeal process
• Best interests and Mental Capacity Act
