Did you know that Manchester Youth Zone runs inclusion sessions every Sunday, where they offer a range of activities, such as sports, arts and crafts, and music, for children and young people with additional needs or disabilities?

These inclusive weekend sessions are split into two age groups:

  • “Opportunities” runs from 10:30am to 1pm and is aimed at children aged 8 to 14. It is suitable for those who require one-to-one support with activities and those who need a calmer environment to thrive. Activities include arts and crafts, baking, football, sensory play, and team games.
  • “Progress” runs from 12:30 to 3pm and is aimed at young people aged 15 to 25. With a focus on independence and life skills, activities include arts and crafts, cooking, multi-sports play, and recreational games.
  • Allocation to a session will be made with age and support needs in consideration.
  • One-to-one support is not offered as part of the programme. A parent/carer needs to be present for those with higher support needs if attending a session.
  • Members can start from age 8 to 19, and the programme extends up to age 25, but new members will not be taken on past their 20th birthday. Manchester Youth Zone will, however, continue to work with members who have an established relationship with them past this age.
  • Lunch will be at 12:30pm and will be a communal overlap between both sessions.

Before a child or young person with additional needs attends an inclusion session for the first time, Tyler Oliver (Inclusion Manager) or one of his colleagues would meet with the parent/carer and the child/young person beforehand to draw up a profile that will help ensure all staff are aware of any triggers or barriers, support strategies, and how best to engage them in activities.

If your child has an About Me document, please bring it with you to the meeting.

For more information, please speak to Tyler at one of the sessions, or contact him by email or via their enquiry form.
