In light of new and emerging research, Manchester City Council, together with educational psychologists from One Education, is keen to update the guidance for schools around supporting children and young people who struggle to access school.
The current guidance in Manchester primarily uses the term “Anxiety Based School Avoidance” (ABSA) and is based on prevailing research available at the time of publication (September 2021). Appendix 6 contains an excerpt from Maggie Johnson and Alison Wintgens’ book , The Selective Mutism Resource Manual, which has a section called “Helping Children to Cope with Anxiety“.
The new guidance will include a change of name – moving away from ABSA and instead using the term “Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance” (EBSNA) or perhaps something even better – and content will be based on the latest research and advice from educational psychologists. We also want to create a new section for parents and carers.
This meeting is for parents and carers to help develop the parent section of the EBSNA guidance. We want this new section to include practical advice that parents/carers can use to support their child, as well as suggestions on how to work with school in developing a suitable support plan for the child or young person.
